Exhibit: A Runway on Water

  • Brandon AveTemporary Building on Ice-640x250

With no roads or runways in the North, pilots used waterways to take off and land – using floats in the summer and skis in winter. That’s why Winnipeg’s first year-round air base was established on the Red River at the foot of Brandon Avenue. Our photo exhibit – Runway on Water – illustrates how aircraft regularly flew in for maintenance and repairs, to fuel up, to change their floats and skis or to load cargo and passengers. Curious onlookers would often come to the base to watch aircraft – including some famous bush planes from Junkers, Vickers, Fokker and Fairchild – take off and land.
